This course will focus on providing clinicians with manual therapy strategies for the spine targeted at the complicated and progressive neurological population. As movement experts, defined by the APTA, clinicians strive to optimize quality of life by decreasing movement loss and maximizing efficient movement performance. Post a neurological injury, individuals live with life-long changes to the neuromuscular system such as overuse injuries leading to chronic pain, paths of compensation, and tonal/dysfunctional patterns for mobility and stability. An individual post neurological injury that is experiencing these changes both acutely and chronically should be assessed differently than a traditional individual in an orthopedic setting secondary to potential complicated medical history and contributing tissue impacts, positions of disease progression, and changes to both the central/peripheral nervous system and its relationship with the body’s tissues. This presentation includes a review of manual therapy schools of practice, how those schools of practice fit into assessment and treatment of pain and dysfunction, the foundations of clinical reasoning, and an isolated review of each section of the spine discussing factors and modification that will impact position and completion of manual therapies for the neurological population. Course instruction methods include lecture, demonstration, lab time, and case studies with question/answers. Upon completion of this course, clinicians that treat individuals with neurological injury will have improved their clinical reasoning skills for assessing pain and dysfunction and be more confident assessing and treating the spine, thorax including the ribs, and lumbopelvic region.
